Montenegro: A Day Trip to Sveti Stefan 2
Sveti Stefan is usually known as a nice holiday resort built from the remnants of a fishing village extending out to the Adriatic sea. The resort is a part of the town, which was probably built later on. The town is now in the form of one of the regular settlements of the region and a small walkway situated on the sea takes visitors to actual Sveti Stefan. It is not possible to enter the resort as it is a hotel open only to its guests.
If I were one of those Hollywood stars or millionaires who lead a top-notch life without considering budget limitations, I know I am weak enough to visit the place for a few weeks without considering anything else. Here, outside the gates, the situation starts to turn into another feeling-however illusionary.
Sveti Stefan must not have been leased to a worldwide hotel chain by the Montenegrin government. It must just have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It could then be one of the greatest old towns of the Mediterranean, artisans would craft their stuff, artists would present their artworks, tradesmen would sell their merchandise in the beautiful buildings, restaurants would offer their amenities with a beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea, visitors would enjoy taking photos of the beautiful gardens and venues and share them in their social media, children and art or gastronomy aficionados would enjoy learning new things in workshops held by the municipality, the entire world would know and visit this nice place, and I would be able to enter it! Unfortunately, the resort has been leased to the hotel chain for about 30 years. You can never know what the future holds.
The town has a beach with really nice, crystal-clear waters. It is not clear whether the majority of the people who sunbathe there are the locals or the guests of the resort, but the beaches are open to everyone.
A nice walk around the alleys of the town and a tasty espresso at a coffee by the seaside are recommended.
