Turkey: Lapseki 1
The district of Lapseki is situated in the province of Canakkale, the westernmost area of Turkey, with critical importance as it is near the Gallipoli Peninsula that is famous for its battlegrounds, now for its monuments dedicated to every nation that fought there in the World War One.
The picture behind the mermaid statue shows the town of Gallipoli. Yes, the famous Gallipoli area has also a town with the same name. It is a quiet and small town and it has always been so, as its topography does not allow horizontal development. We will cover it in details soon.
The photograph of the mermaid was taken by the dock area, the most social area of the town. It once harbored a beautiful Pegasus statue but it was the work of the previous visionary mayor and the saddest thing is the present governance is the same as we see any part of the world that this kind of local mentality tends to disregard works of art in trying to settle their ideas and ideologies. The previous visionary mayor/s have also brought many good things to the town, including the mermaid statue that is still there.
As we mentioned in the intro of this article, Lapseki is situated in the opposite site of Gallipoli. The sea in between is the extension of the Marmara Sea flowing in the form of a strait into the Aegean Sea merging it around the city of Canakkale and the peninsula of Gallipoli. We can therefore say that Lapseki is on the Asian side of Turkey, with close proximity to Europe and the Aegean region. It is also close to the Thrace area, the eastern European connections to Turkey.
Seaside is long in Lapseki and it meets with other settlements and a bridge that sources say has the largest span ever made.As in anywhere in Turkey, cats are many and usually well fed and cared for. Dogs as well and they are growing in number due to the new code enacted and imposing that they will not be taken by local municipalities but spayed and neutered in their whereabouts and left there. In view of the worldwide trouble that villages bring puppies into towns and release there secretly, Lapseki will get its share and be filled with dogs. We like cats and dogs and have been with them for many decades but ill treatment to them is always ongoing. Currently, it is hard to move and explore untouched parts of the town, dogs chase at every nook and cranny, especially in the Dalyan Area.
