Never Bring these Three Things Back from Abroad!

Traveling Suggestions: Never Bring these Three Things Back from Abroad!

Sometimes, just by an oversight, we tend to commit international crime without even intending it and end up being the subject matter of long proceedings with lots of headache.

Here is how:

Countries consider every single thing within their borders as their own assets, not those of the world or humanity even if they have been declared so, as you may know well. Hence, bringing back something from another country is bound to some implementations and rulings. Below are the three things you should never bring back from abroad:

1- Artifacts

We are living in a world with lots of settlements established one on another, with some buried by the sea or ocean and some by soil.

When you are by the seaside, you might have found a figurine, coin, vial, etc. Please take it to authorities and have it registered and leave it there. If you take it home and the police find it with you at the border, it would be considered smuggling. When it is dated, it could be easily understood to what settlement it belongs and how much value it has, until which you might have to wait for the end of the process in a place that you wouldn’t like!

2- Corals

It is extremely dangerous to bring back corals from another country as it could be considered double crime:

  • You have taken corals from reefs under the sea, which is forbidden in many diving sites, in particular the ones under protection.

  • You have smuggled the coral of a country and there is the possibility that you might sell it, reproduce it, etc.

Some divers feel free to take some and hide in their diving gears. No! It is must to avoid taking things from seas and oceans. You should also pay attention in bringing back seashells or other things that may be endemic or of a value.

3- Plants, insects, and seeds

Many plants and insects adapt to the ecosystems of geographies and alter their appearance, size, or even taste in the case of plants-considering that bugs are inedible save for some seafood.

When you are in nature, you might have felt a flower was beautiful and worth putting inside a diary or book, etc. This may create pains in the neck at borders.

Once, we picked acorns in a forest and I realized that one piece was left in my bag after coming home. Luckily, the police searching my bag had not noticed it.

If you buy any of the foregoing through legal means like souvenir or antique shops, its invoice would shorten the process in case of doubt.
