Turkey: Days in Kirklareli 2
It is not indeed realistic to say that the
town is completely developed regardless of the modern buildings available in
the entrance of the town and it is arguable that it has tourist charms but it
still has its own charisma as a town for those who are interested in seeing
tradesmen at work or poring over the Balkan countries or tasting good and
honestly-made food.
The road passing by the bus station situated right in the center goes to the town center that starts around the Municipality building in a few hundred meters of distance. A small street intersects with the center from the Municipality area toward the vicinity of the Governorate. On the street and around it, the modern shops, banks, and the restaurants of the town are aligned.
Contrary to
the restaurants of main streets that are somehow able to discover “zero” taste
in general touristy areas in many towns, it is possible to find ones that offer
delicious food here on this street from time to time. A restaurant after the
mid parts of the street, nearby the Governorate, presents its mouth-watering local
meals with the prices that might bewilder a person from Istanbul. According to
what the locals say, the meat from the area is quite well-known and tasty. This
idea is confirmed by the rotisseries around the town. It is possible to find
the best examples of grilled meatballs that can be found almost everywhere and
it is said that Balkan meals as well as the fried lung which is actually
peculiar to Edirne can be tasted by people who love meat. For vegetarians, the
restaurants oriented to tradesmen, not tourists, offer lots of plant-based meals
including salads and soups.
Toward the end of the road, the Governorate and the traces of the past of the town start to show themselves. After the Governorate, in general, the buildings belonging to the State, the residences of the State representatives, and houses with nice gardens are available. Then, a long promenade accompanied by a line of trees and harboring small and big, ordinary, and nice cafes takes you toward the Station Neighborhood. The station building and some rails are right there. Even the name of the area has not changed but there are no scheduled train trips to the area as of 2012. Therefore, all the buildings and the respective systems around the train station are now inert. One of the areas of recreation where the townsfolk spend their times for the events and activities like sports and walks is this station area. In the town where once trains passed through, this service is not provided anymore but the people are still meeting around the station, a symbol that has been an important meeting point in almost every town since the beginning of the republican period in Turkey.
